Building a Dream
“The crux of all things medical comes down
to patient care. This Hospital has quality physicians;
this Hospital has quality nurses that devote time, effort,
and diligence toward their patients and towards patient
care. I think that as a whole, we do a very good job at
taking care of patients.”
William R. Padgett, M.D. - Obstetrics/Gynecology |

A Commitment to Quality
Where would we be today had our
forbears not possessed a vision for the future? Continuous renewal
is an essential component of our culture. And in no place is this
truer than the rapidly changing environment of healthcare and medicine.
Over the years, Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney has demonstrated
its commitment to progress through ongoing strides to offer the highest
possible quality of care.

“Knowing that your family has a place,
here in our community, that they can go and receive the
best care possible is one of the greatest services a hospital
can provide. So I feel it is very important for friends
and family to be involved with that and really support
the Hospital and what they are doing. Everyone in the community
will benefit from it.”
Dr. Trish Kessler-Bookhout - Richland
County Resident |

A Renewal for Time
For
some time, Richland Memorial Hospital has been discussing the shortcomings
of its current Obstetrics unit and has looked at different plans
to address the problems. When discussions began for this major project,
those involved quickly realized the potential of making an impact
far beyond Obstetrics services. Other areas involved include a new
main entrance, new admitting and outpatient registration services,
a consolidated Women’s Imaging Center, a gift shop, relocation of
the Short Stay Unit and a new building for the Ambulance Service.
The Women’s Health Center and Front Entrance project addresses six
major areas of concern and will positively impact every individual
who walks through the doors of the Hospital.
“Why should I go someplace 30 miles away
or 50 miles away, to a facility or to another community
that offers the services when my hometown not only has
those services, but now they are upgrading them and they’ll
be the state of the art.”
Tom Fehrenbacher - Mayor, City of Olney |

Family Maternity Services
Unit
The Renewing For Health
project allows for several major improvements in the provision of
care to patients receiving Obstetrics and Gynecology services. First
and foremost, it allows Richland Memorial Hospital to implement the
Labor-Delivery-Recovery-Postpartum Room concept, commonly referred
to as LDRP. The new Family Maternity Services Unit will include six
360 sq.ft. LDRP rooms, each with a private bathroom and space for
a family member to sleep. LDRP rooms allow the mother to stay in
the same room throughout her entire hospital stay, while providing
a home-like atmosphere for family members to participate in the experience.
The newborn can also stay in the room with the mother and family
at all times.
The new
Family Maternity Services Unit will also include four private rooms
with individual bathrooms and showers for gynecological patients.
Direct access will be available to the Operating Room, eliminating the
trip down the public hallway. A special procedures room is also included
in the plan for outpatient testing or consultation. The new Family
Waiting area, accessible from the main hallway, allows family members
and visitors to view the newborns in the Well Baby Nursery without entering
the unit.

I hear: Excellent, excellent care – doctors,
nurses; but, sure do wish I had my own bathroom, and,
sure do wish I had my own shower – that would make it
wonderful.”

Family Maternity Services at RMH |

Facility Highlights
Women's Imaging Center
"Having good health care in your
community is an invaluable asset.”
Kevin Bookhout - Richland County Resident |

|
|
Consolidation of women’s diagnostic imaging services to a central
location, with a separate waiting area, will be a significant improvement
for women receiving mammography, ultrasound and bone density services.
Mobile MRI services will continue to be available. The Renewing For
Health project includes a new area for the MRI trailer, which will
be closer to the building and accessed through the Diagnostic Imaging
Services Department.
Ambulance Service
Ambulance garage, which was located
at the East Street side of the campus, has been removed to make
way for the new Women’s Health Center and Front Entrance. A new,
5-bay Ambulance facility has been constructed in the
Southwest area of the hospital campus. Ambulance staff will have
training and sleeping quarters in the new building. Most importantly,
the enhanced facilities will assist Ambulance personnel in their
commitment to providing the fastest possible response to emergency
situations. The new structure was dedicated
on August 22, 2006.

“If everyone in the community can support
it, then it is going to be something that we can all
be proud of; and we can all use.”
Reverend David A. McNabb - Richland
County Resident |

Main Entrance
The project includes a new front entrance on the East side of the
Hospital, facing East Street. The main entrance will be protected
from inclement weather by a canopy for the comfort of patients and
visitors. An additional meeting room will also be located in this
area, which will be available for Hospital or community use.
Admitting and outpatient registration will be dramatically enhanced
with inclusion of three private registration areas with direct access
to the new Main Lobby, providing a comfortable, nearby location for
individuals waiting to be registered.
The overall 16,500 sq.ft. expansion project also includes a 750 sq.ft.
Gift Shop, which is located just off the new Main Entrance. It will
be staffed by volunteers from the Richland Memorial Hospital Auxiliary
and provide an additional source of revenue to support their efforts
in purchasing needed equipment for the facility. It will also create
new volunteer opportunities.
“This is a very exciting time, just
watching the construction going on on this side of East
Street. I think it is very exciting to watch the progress
being made and what it is going to do for the community.”
Kristi Crawford - Richland County Resident |

Short Stay / Same Day Surgery Unit and Surgical Services
With rapidly improving technological developments in the healthcare
industry, many services and procedures that were once considered major
are now being offered on an outpatient basis. Richland Memorial Hospital
has a very busy Short Stay Unit, which provides services to Same Day
Surgery patients, individuals who have had gastrointestinal or endoscopic
procedures, and patients who are receiving IV therapy. After construction
of the new addition, the present Family Maternity Services area will
be remodeled, and the Short Stay Unit will move from the Second Floor
to this location. As part of the remodel, a connection will be made
from the unit to the Operating Room, so patients will not have to travel
through public corridors or change floors during their stay.
The inpatient surgery waiting room will be restructured to allow for
a private physician/family consultation room immediately adjacent to
the waiting room.
Staff locker rooms and support services will also be reorganized to
better meet regulatory requirements.
